Giáo sư Trịnh Xuân Thuận (sinh 1948 tại Hà Nội) là một chuyên gia người Mỹ gốc Việt trong lĩnh vực vật lý thiên văn, là một nhà văn đã viết nhiều quyển sách có giá trị cao về vũ trụ học và về những suy nghĩ của ông trong tương quan giữa khoa học và Phật giáo. Ông còn là một nhà thơ, một triết gia, một Phật tử và một nhà hoạt động cho môi trường và hòa bình. Ông đã nhận lãnh nhiều giải thưởng trong lĩnh vực thiên văn và trong lĩnh vực văn hoá xã hội.

Ông học Trường Yersin (Lycée Yersin) tại Đà Lạt và Trường Jean Jacques Rousseau tại Sài Gòn. Năm 1966, sau tú tài, ông rời Sài Gòn đi du học Thụy Sĩ, và sau đó được nhận một học bổng du học tại Hoa Kỳ.

Ông đã theo học ngành vật lý thiên văn tại Học viện Công nghệ California (California Institute of Technology) từ 1967 đến 1970, và tại Đại học Princeton từ 1970 đến 1974. Ông bảo vệ luận án tiến sĩ tại Đại học Princeton. Từ năm 1976, ông là giáo sư vật lý thiên văn tại Đại học Virginia.

Theo Xuân Hạo, 2004: “Trịnh Xuân Thuận thấm nhuần văn hóa Pháp, là công dân và làm việc tại Hoa Kỳ, viết những công trình khoa học bằng tiếng Anh, nhưng viết những tác phẩm về vũ trụ lại bằng tiếng Pháp. Điều đáng nói là những tác phẩm về vũ trụ nhưng đọc dễ hiểu, bởi chúng được viết từ một nhà khoa học giàu mỹ cảm, bằng tư duy lô-gích của một nhà khoa học, nhà triết học và trí tưởng tượng của một nhà thơ sành sỏi thiên văn. Chính kiến thức sâu rộng, đa dạng trên nhiều lĩnh vực của Trịnh Xuân Thuận, những khái niệm về thiên văn mà ông trình bày trở nên mềm mại, óng ả. Đó cũng là phương pháp của ông để đưa thiên văn học gần gũi với mọi người: ‘Tác phẩm này dành cho những chính nhân (honnête homme), những người không có một hành trang kỹ thuật, nhưng tò mò muốn biết không chỉ những điều kỳ lạ mới nhất của khoa học ở thế kỷ XX mà cả những hệ quả triết học và thần học của những thành tựu đó’ (lời đề tựa tác phẩm “Hỗn độn và hài hòa”). Chính phương pháp đó cũng được sử dụng trong “Giai điệu bí ẩn” và đưa nó trở thành tác phẩm best-seller ở Pháp và được dịch ra nhiều thứ tiếng. Có lẽ đó cũng là lý do đưa Trịnh Xuân Thuận, một công dân Mỹ lại có mặt chính thức trong phái đoàn của Tổng thống Mitterrand thăm VN năm 1993.”

Trinh Xuan Thuan Biography

Trinh Xuan Thuan was born on 20th August, 1948 in Hanoï (Vietnam). He left Hanoi at the age of 6, when Vietnam was divided into two parts at the 17th parallel by the Geneva treaty, signed in 1954. His family then moved to Sàigon, capital of South Vietnam. He pursued his studies in Saigon, at the French high-school Jean-Jacques Rousseau. It is during that period that he acquired the French style that allowed him to write in French such great popular books on astrophysics and cosmology, that are famous not only for their scientific accuracy, but also for their poetic language. He passes with high honors the baccalaureate degree in 1966.

He then went abroad for his higher education. After one year in Switzerland (1966-1967), at the Ecole Polytechnique in Lausanne, he continued his studies in well-known American universities. He obtained his Bachelor of Physics at the California Institute off Technology (Caltech) in 1970, then his PhD in Astrophysics at Princeton University in 1974, under the guidance of the eminent astrophysicist Lyman Spitzer, father of the Hubble space Telescope and one of the pioneers of the physics of the interstellar medium and of plasmas.

Research and Teaching

Since 1976, he has been a professor of astronomy at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, and divides his time between the United States and France. As an invited professor at the University of Paris 7, at the observatory of Paris-Meudon, at the department of astrophysics of Saclay and at the IAP (Institute of astrophysics of Paris) of the CNRS, he collaborates regularly with French scientists.

At the end of 2004, thanks to observations made with Hubble, he discovered the youngest known galaxy in the universe (I Zwicky 18) – a discoverery that was amply discussed in the international press.

In addition to his research, he teaches a course at the University of Virginia which is called “Astronomy for Poets”. In this course, students with a non-scientitific background have the pleasure of discovering the wonders of the Universe in a non-technical language.
